While you work to bring about change on a large scale, take the time to examine what might have brought about the situation as it currently stands. Knowing the history and the background of the people involved may make it easier to see specific changes that need to be made in order to bring about a major shift. Today while taking action to bring about change, you also seek understanding of the causes that created the need for transformation. Situations that have a long history may deeply affect the consciousness of the people involved, perhaps for several generations. Since each generation learns from their parents, if the parents were oppressed, they will teach the beliefs of the oppression to their children. Whether the oppressor was a physical entity or an ideology, people's ideas about what is possible for them may be limited. To bring about major change in a group of disenfranchised people, it may be necessary to change both their inner worlds and outer worlds at the same time. If the outside changes without a shift in understanding, the change may not make much difference.
