Taking things personally might be a defense mechanism you have for protecting yourself. You might see the world as a threatening place and use the things you hear from others as a reason to retreat from the world. Realizing that what others say and the way they say it is often because of their own issues could help you let things go today. Should you begin to feel hurt by someone's remarks, you can ask yourself how important it is to be upset by their words, since they may be saying things because they themselves are hurt. You may find that interpreting what you hear in this way could make it easier to let things go. Once we recognize that others' comments are usually reflections of their own emotional state, their remarks will have less power over us. While part of what we hear may be related to our own feelings, often when others say things that offend us it is mostly due to the problems they have in their lives; true communication always takes into account the feelings of everyone.
