| | Casey Martin takes us inside his brutal journey
| Thunderbolt hits golfer. If you had to tell the story of Casey Martin in three words, those would be mine. How else to describe the impossibly rare genetic birth defect in his leg that struck into motion the events of one of golf’s most extraordinary lives. Red-shirting after winning a national championship at Stanford University so that he could play alongside Tiger Woods. Taking the PGA Tour all the way to the Supreme Court and winning. Qualifying for U.S. Opens from a cart. Coaching the Oregon Ducks from crutches. And most recently, amputating that pesky leg above the knee. As part of an in-depth Golf Digest+ project, Casey Martin allowed our editorial team full access, starting with his decision to amputate eight months ago, a feeling which he described “like walking to the gallows.” Throughout his torturous recovery, we visited multiple times in person and over Zoom, tracing the progress of his lofty dream of finding a prostheses that might enable him to compete on PGA Tour Champions. (He turned 50 just last week—Happy Birthday, Casey.) This 18-minute video, paired with my magazine-length feature, is a distillation of Martin’s journey, and is an example of the type of ambitious multimedia storytelling you can expect from Golf Digest+.
You can watch the video here.
Together, the words and the video make two halves of a whole. Casey Martin is one of golf’s significant figures, and we cannot adequately thank him for the graciousness with which he let us into his life. Personally, I am a better player for all the time I spent with Casey. He is full of practical wisdoms, let alone the larger one that golf is a brutal game filled with disappointment and it is how we respond that separates the champions.
