The Lunch Line: Cash for vaccinations; and Saints open training camp

By Bob Warren

Saints camping: Everyone’s favorite football team opened training camp in Metairie this morning. But even before the Saints had their first practice, a couple of big stories had surfaced:

  • The timing of wide receiver Michael Thomas’ ankle surgery perhaps isn’t sitting so well with the coach.
  • And All-Pro punt returner Deonte Harris could face a suspension after being arrested of suspicion of DUI.

Check NOLA.com throughout the day for lots of great Saints coverage.

Cash? Would cash change your mind? So if you haven’t been vaccinated yet, would $100 make it worth your while? A hospital in Hammond is putting that question to the test. And guess what? Vaccine slots filled up pretty quickly.

Speaking of . . .seems like more places are moving into “proof-of-vaccine” mode. Our music guy Keith Spera reports that you’ll need vax proof or a negative COVID test to get into Tipitina’s, the Maple Leaf Bar and d.b.a.

Meanwhile, Ochsner, the state’s largest health care system, is tightening restrictions for unvaccinated employees – about 39% of its workers.

Eviction moratorium: President Joe Biden said this morning he won't try and extend the federal eviction moratorium when it expires this weekend. Our John Simerman caught has spent a lot of time talking with people about what might come.

Lakefront retirement in Mandeville: The old Al Copeland land on the lakefront in Mandeville could become the site of a $150 million retirement community. The Copeland family donated 29 acres to the LSU Health Foundation, which plans a community with homes, restaurants, shops, etc.

Finally, there was an error in Wednesday’s Lunch Line, as a few kind folks have pointed out. In mentioning COVID cases, I wrote that 8% of the new cases were for unvaccinated people. It obviously should have said vaccinated. My apologies.

All this and much more in today’s Lunch Line. Thanks for taking a break with us.
