On this day in 1974, The Canberra Times reported that Prime Minister Gough Whitlam had launched an election campaign to a crowd of more than 3000, promising free healthcare and childcare. "Mr Whitlam appealed for a period of stable government in Australia and of stable leadership," the report said.
