U.S. health officials on Monday cut isolation restrictions for Americans who catch the coronavirus from 10 to five days, and similarly shortened the time that close contacts need to quarantine.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said the guidance is in keeping with growing evidence that people with the coronavirus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.

The decision also was driven by a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, propelled by the omicron variant.

“We want to make sure there is a mechanism by which we can safely continue to keep society functioning while following the science," said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky.

Katrina and James Ball were living and working in the Cayman Islands when the coronavirus pandemic hit.

They packed their bags and flew to Minnesota with two young children, heading to Battle Lake, a small town in west-central Minnesota where Katrina's parents live and where they often spent summer vacations.

“This is kind of the first spot we thought we'd come to,” said Katrina. “We thought, ‘we'll go ride out the pandemic in Minnesota, with a little more space.’”

That was mid-April 2020. Now, they bought a house in Battle Lake where they can walk to the school their children attend, and to the coworking space that Katrina helps run in an old church, and where they often spend their workdays. [Continue reading]
 
What else we're watching
Appeals court says group can sue over Minnesota mining rules. A Minnesota appellate court affirmed Monday that a wilderness advocacy group has standing to challenge state rules restricting copper mining sites. The ruling means that Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness' efforts to block a proposed copper mine near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness can continue.

Omicron is spreading quickly, but fewer of the infected are ending up in the hospital. As the omicron variant coronavirus spreads rapidly, one positive is that a smaller percentage of infected people are winding up in the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms compared to earlier strains.

The first fully certified 'living building' in the world is here in Minnesota. A lodge at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minn., is the first renovation project in the world to receive full Living Building Challenge certification. The executive director of Wolf Ridge told host Cathy Wurzer more about the unique, cutting-edge sustainability features of the building.
