The latest insights from CDP: Global Climate Action Summit special

We are at a critical moment for global environmental action. The Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals marked the start of a new, sustainable strategy for the world and sent a clear signal that business as usual is over. But time is running out. Never has it been more important to raise the bar to secure a thriving, sustainable economy for people and planet.

At the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in California this week, national, state and local governments, business, investors and citizens from around the world are coming together to celebrate positive action and spur increased ambition on climate change. Only by understanding their impacts can the world's emitters take steps towards addressing them. It starts with disclosure.

The Universal Disclosure Challenge

The Universal Climate Disclosure Challenge called for 300 new companies, cities, states and regions to disclose their climate impact ahead of this week's summit. At CDP’s Affiliate Event, we celebrate all of those who are using disclosure as the first step to environmental action. The final results of the challenge will be announced on Thursday.

Inside the summit

Thursday 13th (am): Join the opening plenary session of the Global Climate Action Summit to hear the results of the Universal Climate Disclosure Challenge, as well as more on the increasing momentum around science-based climate action. More here

Thursday 13th (pm): Businesses Stepping Up with Science-Based Targets. In this myth-busting session, executives from a diverse array of global companies that have committed to this rigorous approach will offer a blueprint for how they are tackling stringent emission reduction targets while improving their market competitiveness. Thursday 13th (pm): The Investor Agenda: Accelerating Action for a Low-Carbon World. In this session, global institutional investors will announce their commitment to The Investor Agenda and discuss the progress they have made so far in achieving its aims. More here

Friday 14th (am): Plenary Session. The program will focus on announcements of the most significant and ambitious commitments brought to the Global Climate Action Summit. This will include actions pledged toward immediate decarbonization — striving to achieve global peaking of emissions by 2020— and a purposeful step toward the goal of carbon neutrality by mid-century. Tuesday 11th, 12:30-18:00: The 2°Investing Initiative, ADEME and CDP are co-hosting this event, at which CDP’s CEO Paul Simpson will join other high-profile speakers to discuss the financial sector’s contribution to the Paris Agreement, scenario analysis, target-setting, the ACT Project and the need for evidence to back up green marketing claims. Tuesday 11th (all day): This event brings together senior government officials, business leaders, academics, international experts, and non-governmental organizations to engage on key aspects of carbon pricing, including carbon markets, and how to leverage carbon pricing to increase ambition in addressing climate change. Wednesday 12th, 09:00-12:30: This panel event, Buy Clean: How Governments and Companies can use procurement to close the carbon loophole, will hear from government policy makers and members of CDP’s Supply Chain program on strategies to Buy Clean to align their procurement with their climate ambitions. Wednesday 12th, 9:00-11:30: The Alliances for Climate Action will unite representatives of companies, local and sub-national governments, academia and civil society to why domestic alliances have a valuable role to play in their countries to support NDC implementation and enhancement. More here

Wednesday 12th, 17:00-19:00: A celebration of the hundreds of companies who are at the forefront in leading corporate climate action by making science-based targets a cornerstone of their business strategies. More here

Thursday 13th, 08:15-10:15: Navigant will host a briefing to explore how women leaders at Mars, McDonald’s, Microsoft, and UN Global Compact/SBTi are driving change in the science-based trenches at corporations to set world class targets. More here

Thursday 13th, 13:00-17:00: This high-level session featuring CDP’s Jennie Gleed alongside Mayors, Premiers and high-level business representatives will discuss how to quantify the aggregate emissions reduction potential and progress to date from states, cities and businesses. More here

Thursday 13th, 15:00-17:00: This event hosted by the Italian Ministry of Environment and GRI will offer the opportunity to explore the stewardship role of policies to drive corporate action on SDG 13 on climate actions, through the use of corporate disclosure.
