Stephen Hayes (American, b. 1983) Boundless, 2021 11 Bronze Cast Figures, 16' x 7.5' x 3' Collection of Cameron Art Museum
CAM’s latest acquisition is also its most well-known. Boundless, installed in 2021, by North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes commemorates the story of the United States Colored Troops who fought for their freedom here, where the museum now stands.
Boundless weighs 2,500 pounds and took two years to complete. Hayes built Boundless in his studio at Duke University, where he often worked round the clock. It was cast into bronze at Carolina Bronze in Seagrove, North Carolina. Boundless is the most expensive work in CAM’s collection.
Boundless pays homage to The Shaw Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In Boundless, Hayes dispenses with the racial hierarchy of Saint-Gaudens’s work, instead bringing the focus to eleven USCT soldiers, marching directly on the last living vestige of Federal Point Road. Hayes cast the features of 11 men for his work; 7 of which are descendants of the USCT.
Boundless is on display free of charge on the grounds of Cameron Art Museum at Battle of Forks Road historic site. We invite you to walk the trails at the historic site, explore the earthworks, and experience the triumph of Boundless. |
