EARLY DETECTION AND DIAGNOSIS NEWSLETTER

Hi Voornaam,

We are celebrating outstanding contributions in the field of cancer early detection through this years Don Listwin award. If you know a colleague or team who has contributed to this field, celebrate their work by nominating them now.

The award will be presented at our international Early Detection of Cancer Conference in October. The conference itself promises to be the best one yet with a record-breaking number of abstracts submitted and an amazing line-up of speakers, including Professor Chris Whitty, England's Chief Medical Officer. Our tickets are limited and running out, register now to avoid disappointment, as we totally sold out last year.

We have highlighted other upcoming events to help you keep abreast with the latest developments in early detection and network with colleagues.

The ACED Summer School is designed for early career researchers to learn how best to evaluate early cancer tests. For those interested in cancer screening, our head of Policy Development, Kruti Shrotri, will be speaking at the Public Policy Exchanges forum on improving cancer screening through tackling COVID-19 backlogs, reducing inequalities and embracing new technologies.

Meanwhile, dont forget to register for the inaugural Data-driven cancer research conference if you are already working or interested in the use of cancer research data to drive discovery and innovation.

Finally, it was great to see several of you at our first prevention research workshop on the opportunities and needs for better biological model systems to enable precision prevention approaches.

As we move towards a future of more targeted and risk-stratified preventative interventions, there will be an increasing need to unite the expertise of the early detection and prevention research communities.

We look forward to seeing more of you at future events!

Kind regards,
David Crosby
Head of Prevention and Early Detection Research

DISCOVER OUR PROGRESS TOWARDS DIVERSITY IN FUNDING

Weve published our latest review of who has applied for and received our grant funding over the past five years. This years data show that were making progress in creating a more inclusive and diverse research community. Overall success rates for men and women who apply for our funding are equal, were receiving increasing numbers of fellowship applications from people from ethnic minority backgrounds and were providing targeted support to encourage more Black students into cancer research.

These are steps in the right direction, but were still not satisfied with the way things are. In our latest report, we talk about the programmes and people were working with to drive forward change and create a truly inclusive research community.
