In 2014, Willie Cole unveiled an installation at CAM that looked closely at the legacy of sixteen historically black schools in New Hanover and surrounding counties that were closed in the 1960s as a result of desegregation. "School Pride: The Eastern NC Story," in conjunction with the Countywide Community Development Corporation, took the story of desegregation in eastern NC and translated it into an emotionally charged multi-gallery installation that referenced personal experiences and historical events.

100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage
Today, August 18, 2020 marks the the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women's constitutional right to vote. CAM commemorates this milestone with a new community project. Artists, quilters, and all citizens are invited to help re-create the words and letter of the 19th Amendment on a banner that will be displayed at CAM. More details to come! |

We just published a new School Program Guide, highlighting our virtual programs and resources for educators and families, and two booklets of lesson plans that are perfect for use in the classroom or at home. We're also hosting a Virtual Night for Educators on September 8 at 4 PM and a Virtual Night for Families on September 9 at 4 PM to connect teachers and families with our resources for virtual learning. |

For the past five years, Illumination, an exhibition of artist-made lanterns, has marked the transition of the season’s change and the year’s end at Cameron Art Museum. This year, deep in the COVID crisis, we ask artists to examine their own metaphorical concept of light.
Luminescence often symbolizes transformation, enlightenment, or an epiphany. Glowing lamplight might remind us of home and safety, the porch light left on for your return. We talk of our inner light or how someone can light up a room. Candles lit in remembrance show that the memory of a loved one still burns bright. The beam of a lighthouse and an airplane’s runway can guide our way. Light makes things visible, sweeping away the shadows, and showing what hides in darkness.
In your work, through content, style, and choice of material, show us what light means to you. |
