Everyone loves a parade! Pole parade gives patients a fun break
Cancer treatment has come a long way in recent years. But it's still tough. For those who have extended stays in the hospital, it can be especially difficult.
That's why four times a year — Spring, Independence Day, Halloween and Winter Holidays — The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center organizes a chemotherapy pole parades.
Patients love preparing for these events, which are great distractions from their treatments. They often get inventive and sometimes a little competitive — dressing up in costumes, coming up with themes or adding lights to their poles.
"The pole parades are opportunities for patients and family members to temporarily forget about their medical concerns and have a little fun," says nurse Marla Pierce.
Visitors and MD Anderson staff line the halls to cheer on the patients. The parades provide a time to celebrate their strength and remind them they're not alone.
