After striking gold with her quietly powerful drama Past Lives, Celine Song became the new writer-director to watch. Two years later, she’s back with Materialists, a New York–set romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The enigma of love is a source of endless fascination for Song. “We talk about true love like we’re talking about Santa Claus,” she says. “It’s like a kid made it up.” Song spoke to us about the inspiration behind her new film, why love makes her feel dumb and whether Pedro Pascal is as wonderful as he seems.

MAYOR OLIVIA CHOW SAYS VIDEO GAMES ARE COOL, ACTUALLY

The waterfront got a supersized screening of Toronto-themed video games last week, when the Canada Malting Silos served as a silver screen for puzzles, platformers and more. The event was the kick-off for Toronto Games Week, a grassroots festival comprising dozens of independent events. Mayor Chow has declared June Toronto Video Game Month, emphasizing the industry’s role in Toronto.

INSIDE THE OUTRAGEOUSLY LUXURIOUS NOBU HOTEL TORONTO

When Nobu opened its Toronto restaurant last August—just ahead of TIFF—the timing couldn’t have been better. The city was crawling with A-listers, and Nobu became a beacon for both the legitimately famous (Drake, Selena Gomez, a few Raptors) and the Toronto crowd who aspire to look like they just left an after-party. The long-promised hotel quietly opened earlier this month, with 36 rooms, a private lobby and a restaurant reserved exclusively for guests.
