New heads for Europe and still little hope for savers

Work began on 1 December not only for the new EU Commission, but also for the new EU Council President Charles Michel. The new President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, took office on time on 1 November. Just like Commission President von der Leyen, she too has to cope with high expectations, especially since she has taken over the ECB, an institution that is regarded as internally divided. Lagarde is aware of this starting position and has therefore promised to review the central bank's strategy in the coming months. Few people expect a move away from zero interest rate monetary policy. Nevertheless, there are expectations that Lagarde will reverse Mario Draghi's last controversial decision and put an end to billion-dollar purchases of government bonds.

Offliner in the EU

Internet usage in Europe varies considerably. While in Northern Europe almost everyone has already used the Internet, the number of users in Southern and Eastern Europe is far lower. For example, 2% offliners in Denmark are compared to 27% in Bulgaria. In Germany the share is 5%. The data refer to Internet users aged between 16 and 74 and date from 2018.
