A Letter From the Executive Director

As some of you may know, I recently became the executive director of the Chicano Humanities & Arts Council.
It’s been quite a busy time these past few weeks for me, Cynthia and Sean!  I have to admit that although it’s been a whirlwind I have been enjoying myself!  I want to thank them both for being so supportive and helpful!

I’ve had the opportunity to meet many new community members, artists and reconnecting with old friends and artist that I’ve known for many years.

Overtime I plan to make some changes that I will be sharing with our members, volunteers and our community partners.
Again, I want to thank the board of directors for giving me this awesome opportunity!

Cordialmente,

Lucille Rivera

Denver Public Schools
Heritage Day Student Artist Winner:

Julieta Padilla

Heritage Day at CU Boulder is an event organized by a couple of DPS teacher leaders, Maria Fernandez-Guerrero, Diana Noonan, and Fernando Pabon, in order to celebrate and motivate our young Latino students to feel proud of their bilingual skills and bicultural nature. Every year students participate in academic and cultural competitions such as Spelling Bee in Spanish, Discourse, Piñatas, Food, Dance, Singing, and Drawing, among others. Also, each year a student, winner of the Best of Show Award, earns the opportunity to showcase their art in the CHAC museum.
This year's winner is Julieta Padilla, a Junior at Noel Community Arts High School. Julieta is a talented artist who has been an NCAS student since 9th grade. She is an example of the talent our students in Denver and in the Montbello community posses. She grew up in Colorado but her parents are from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, México. When asked what role and/or importance art has played in her life, she stated "Art is not only something I do to show personal emotion and passion about things, but it lets me see the beauty in everything. Most of the time it is symbolic and not literal and in your face. Whenever I am inspired or passionate about something, I can always turn it into an art piece."
As a teacher in DPS, I want to say "Thank you CHAC Museum for the opportunity to showcase our students' talents and culture!"

Julieta's award winning piece will be on display at CHAC all month of June

With his unique style and ability to work with multiple techniques, he creates his pieces using acrylic paints. His "Sculpture Painting" are rich in form, color, composition and texture.

CHAC Artists for June:

Michael Penny- Myths, symbols, and legends permeate all languages, cultures and lives. The influence mythology has in our most basic traditions can be observed in the language, customs, rituals, values and morals of every culture. One way of understanding a culture is to study the underlying mythological beliefs, the symbols used to represent myths, and understanding the legends of a culture. Such an exploration leads to a greater understanding of the essence of a culture.
I try to express the myths, symbols, and legends of ancient cultures through my art.
