April Edition

Welcome to the April edition of the City of Cockburn's Champion Clubs newsletter.

It's been a rocky road over the past few weeks with the public health issues around COVID-19 creating disruptions and restrictions for all.  Our winter clubs are understandably disappointed about the ssupesion or cancellation of their season and the future flow on of this. We'd like to thank our clubs for responding so quickly as Recreation Services worked to comply with government restrictions on social distancing and gatherings with our facilities.

The team in Rec Services are still working behind the scenes and are available to assist clubs however we can during this time, just email us .

Over the coming weeks, we hope to be providing direct support to club committees with more frequent updates aimed at helping you guide your clubs through the current uncertainty. Please do forward this and other emails on to your committee members and encourage them to subscribe to share the information as much as possible.

Club management during
COVID-19

While local sports organisations, particularly winter sports, have been hit hard by COVID-19, now could be a great time to focus on club management issues while there is less pressure to take registrations or organise teams, training and normal season competition.  This could help to keep your club focused and ready to reignite once COVID restrictions have passed and could include tasks such as:
  • creating a social media policy
  • updating by-laws
  • reviewing the constitution
  • creating club specific  email addresses (president@, secretary@, etc)
  • implementing marketing ideas
  • developing a business plan (helpful when applying for large grants)
  • conducting a member survey for ideas and feedback
  • develop some new fundraising ideas.
There are some great resources available for volunteers running community sporting clubs to develop better governance, including the City of Cockburn's Champion Clubs initiative on our website or for further help contact the Club Development Officer

Keeping your club members connected

Whilst many clubs have been forced to shut down for this season due to COVID, keeping your members engaged with your club is essential for club morale and also each individual member.

Communication with your members is key for the success of your sports clubs and even more so now. Platforms such as Facebook pages or groups, MailChimp e-newsletters (or other email facility), or club website are valuable tools to keep contact with your members while the season is disrupted. Even simple gestures such as coaches calling the players could make a big difference to those missing their team mates and struggling with isolation.

City of Cockburn Sports Hall of Fame 2020 Nominations

The City of Cockburn is home to many elite athletes, past and present. Nineteen of them are currently recognized in the City's Sports Hall of Fame in two locations; the City Administration building and the Cockburn ARC.

The Hall of Fame includes athletes from a variety of sports, ranging from AFL to sailing and also acknowledges the junior Cockburn clubs these athletes came from.

Nominations will soon be opening for the 2020 Sports Hall of Fame and we encourage our clubs and community to start thinking who would be a worthy new addition to be honoured on the wall.

On a more positive note...

Monday 6th April was the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, declared in 2013 in honour of the first modern Olympic Games held in 1896. It has been celebrated since 2014.

Sport as a universal language can be a powerful tool to promote peace, tolerance and understanding by uniting people across many boundaries. Its intrinsic values such as teamwork, fairness, discipline, respect for the opponent and the rules of the game are understood all over the world.

Sport encourages:

  • Individual development
  • Health promotion and disease prevention
  • The promotion of gender equality
  • Social integration and the development of social capital
  • Peace building and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Post-disaster/trauma relief and normalisation of life
  • Economic development
  • Communication and social mobilisation

The City of Cockburn extends a massive thank you to all of our sporting clubs for the positive impact that they have on our  broader community.
