Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

Next week marks the beginning of a new chapter with real, lasting change in America. This week, Republicans continued to properly vet the nominations President Trump has chosen to serve in his Cabinet. President Trump and Republicans are ready to reverse the damage done to our economy and our security under the current administration. Change is coming, and together, we’ll build a brighter future for America.

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

News That You Can Use

Due to severe weather, President Trump’s Inauguration, along with the Inaugural Parade, will now be held indoors out of safety concerns. Sadly, that means that the Inauguration tickets distributed through my office are no longer valid. I’m deeply sorry to all the South Carolinians who traveled to our nation’s capital to witness this historic occasion, but President Trump made the decision that was in best interest of everyone’s safety.

Spark! Places of Innovation, from the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Service will be making its next stop in Gaffney, South Carolina! The exhibition will be on view at the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery from January 18, 2025 to February 22, 2025. The exhibition features stories gathered from diverse communities across the country.

FEMA may be able to assist renters and homeowners that have sustained damage or losses due to Hurricane Helene in South Carolina. Although the deadline to apply for federal assistance has been extended to January 28, FEMA strongly urges those to apply as soon as possible. You can apply for assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center.

Opening Remarks at HUD Secretary Nomination Hearing

At Thursday’s Senate Banking Committee hearing on Scott Turner’s nomination to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, I stressed the importance of expanding access to quality, affordable housing to help more Americans achieve their version of the American Dream. I look forward to working with Mr. Turner to cut bureaucratic red tape, advance commonsense housing solutions, and put more Americans on the path to homeownership.

Questioning Scott Bessent at Confirmation Hearing

This week, I had the opportunity to question South Carolina native Scott Bessent, President-elect Trump’s nominee to serve as U.S. Treasury Secretary, at his confirmation hearing. Mr. Bessent and I discussed a wide range of topics, including the stability of our nation’s banking industry, Opportunity Zones, and the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).

Meeting with Tulsi Gabbard

I had the pleasure of meeting with former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, President-elect Trump’s nominee to serve as Director of National Intelligence (DNI). She is a person of high character who is dedicated to serving her country. We had a serious and productive conversation about the threats America faces from enemies around the world and how we can strengthen our national security to keep Americans safe.

Meeting with Trump Nominee to Lead Dept. of Education

Image

As a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) and Co-Chair of the Congressional School Choice Caucus, I was fortunate to meet with Linda McMahon, President Trump’s nominee to serve as U.S. Secretary of Education. I look forward to working with her and President Trump to ensure that every student across our nation – regardless of race or zip code – has access to a quality education.

Sharing the #SCSweetTea

I’m proud to see The Citadel’s Band performing in the upcoming presidential inauguration parade! More than 100 members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets will participate in the historic event, along with the Summerall Guards and Color Guard. While the parade is now inside, I’m so thrilled to see The Citadel representing South Carolina in front of the nation and the world! Read more here!

Wall Street Journal: Senate Banking Committee Chairman Says He’ll Keep Pushing for Changes to Private Markets

By Corrie Driebusch

January 15, 2025

Private securities are shaping up to be a hot topic on Capitol Hill this year.

Sen. Tim Scott (R., S.C.), the new chairman of the Republican-led Senate Banking Committee, said Wednesday that one of his priorities is legislation he proposed last year that would allow any investor who can pass an exam to buy private securities.

It’s a push that has a lot of fans on Wall Street where advisory firms are trying to get a bigger slice of retirement funds and savings into private-equity funds and other nontraditional investments—investments that happen to garner bigger fees.
