Halloween is just a couple of days away! As a kid, I looked forward to trick-or-treating because I loved showing off whatever obscure costume I had planned, and I loved hauling home a HUGE bag of candy. Now I’m interested in this article Rebecca Olds wrote about parents putting a modern spin on candy economics with things like letting their kids choose to keep candy or exchange it for money to help teach negotiation and money skills.
I thought an Idaho father’s tradition of a “dad tax” where the kids “pay” taxes on their Halloween haul was particularly delightful. The dad in question is Luke Erickson, associate finance professor at the University of Idaho, and he is teaching his kids the importance of personal finance. (But I think we all know he wants some candy for himself!)
Tell me: Do you try anything like this with your kids’ Halloween candy?

Perspective: We need a new ethic of sexual integrity that requires more of men
In 2022, two books came out with strong criticisms against modern sexual mores. The first by Louise Perry, “The Case Against the Sexual Revolution,” argues that women have more freedom and options than ever before, but the sexual revolution did not put them on an even playing field with men.
Latter-day Saint writer Gabrielle Blair’s book, she argues that the debates around abortion should focus more on men’s responsibility to avoid unwanted pregnancies that could end in termination.
Contributor Valerie Hudson writes about the importance of these works in framing discussions around abortion, sex and family. Read her perspective here.

According to a statement from Evan McMullin’s campaign for U.S. Senate, Fox News’ Bret Baier contacted both Sen. Mike Lee and McMullin about their interest in a national debate on Nov. 1 hosted by a Fox News anchor. McMullin’s statement said “definitively that he would debate Lee” if he agreed to the terms, but three days later Lee declined.
A spokesman for Lee, however, maintained in a statement “It is not accurate to say he declined a debate. Sen. Lee regularly has invitations from national media outlets and we cannot say yes to them all.” His statement also pressed that he is currently meeting with constituents up until the election.
