Nursing home nightmaresBob Dean became infamous in Louisiana after a group of nursing homes he owned catastrophically evacuated to a Tangipahoa Parish warehouse for Hurricane Ida. More than 800 patients were left in disgusting and dangerous conditions; several died there, and more died not long afterwards. Now Dean is facing a whirlwind of lawsuits, investigations, property seizures and other problems. As his small nursing home empire crumbles, there are signs of major disarray, including a massive pile of patient records found behind an abandoned Walgreens. Our investigative reporters have been following what's happening, and what it might mean for Dean's many patients. Here's what they've found.
The school board and St. GeorgeAs the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board redraws its own voting maps, it is having to account for the fact that the parish's population is increasingly moving into the southern part of the parish. Much of that growth is in the area where voters have chosen to create a new, independent City of St. George — and a seperate school district could follow. We looked at what all this change could mean for a school system that has been disrupted by "breakaway" school districts in the past.
