Charles Overton and Julian Loida will join us for a free Neighborhood Arts digital concert Thursday, March 25, at 7:30pm EDT.

The extraordinary duo of Charles Overton and Julian Loida are frequent collaborators, and they weave their ethereal sounds together in music that crosses and combines styles: ambient, jazz, world, classical, and much more.

Together, they will present "Soul and Spark," a program that pulls from elements of jazz, classical, ambient and cinematic music as well as the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic to share fresh compositions that uplift the soul and spark the imagination.

The performance will be recorded live at Futura Productions in Roslindale with help from The Loop Lab, and will feature a live Q&A with the artists immediately following the premiere.

Artist Highlight

Julian Loida's recent project, ‘A Millennial Musician,’ is a podcast where Loida interviews artists to help listeners learn what it's like to be a millennial musician today.

Charles Overton was featured on Episode 4 of the podcast. In the interview, he reflects on his development, freelancing experience, the ups and downs of being a young artist, and his response when people ask if he ever wished he had picked the flute instead of the harp.

About Charles Overton:

Charles Overton is a Boston-based harpist and performer of classical, jazz, and world music. He began his harp studies at the age of ten under the direction of Lynelle Ediger, where as a member of her "American Youth Harp Ensemble" he was afforded the opportunity at an early age to perform internationally in notable venues such as the Salle Gaveaux in Paris and Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.

In 2012 Charles moved to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music where he continued to study classical music under the direction of BSO principal harpist, Jessica Zhou, and began to explore the world of jazz and other improvised musics more seriously.

Over the course of his musical career, Charles has performed at several summer music festivals such as the Tanglewood Music Center, Pacific Music Festival, and the Castleton Festival, and with various ensembles in some of the world's greatest concert halls including Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston's Symphony Hall and the KKL Luzern Concert Hall.

About Julian Loida:

Called “one of the Boston music scene's most valuable players” by The Art Fuse, Julian Loida is a percussionist, composer, and producer. Loida’s musical curiosity and open-mindedness has propelled him towards a wide-range of sounds, genres, and artistic endeavors. He’s performed jazz, folk, and classical, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, songwriters/composers, and musicians of all stripes.

The thirst to participate in and experience this range of sounds is partly a product of Loida’s synesthesia. Music is a full-body experience for him, with sounds often invoking involuntary sensations of color, texture, or even taste.

Loida has toured internationally as a featured artist at Korrö, Sweden’s largest folk music festival, and played some of the most prestigious music festivals in the U.S. such as Spoleto, New World Festival, the Exit Zero jazz festival, Caramoor American Roots Festival, and Round Top Music Festival. He has performed with groups such as Alarm Will Sound, the Callithumpian Consort, and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.
