Charlize Theron has become a Hollywood movie icon in her own right.

The South African-born beauty made her movie debut with an uncredited part in the 1995 horror classic, Children of the Corn III. But it was playing a hitman's girlfriend in the 1996 noir drama 2 Days in the Valley that kickstarted what would become a multi-award-winning career for the blonde bombshell from Benoni.

From her Oscar-winning performance in Monster to her multiple award-nominated appearances in films including Mad Max: Fury Road, Bombshell, and Tully, to name a few – her 2019 Hollywood Career Achievement award was well-deserved.

But even for her, there's an iconic film that has become 'the one that got away' and which she could just never forget.

"For a while, I was attached to Chicago," she told Howard Stern in a 2019 interview on his SiriusXM radio show.

Based on the 1975 musical of the same name, Chicago boasted a star-studded ensemble cast that included Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly, Christine Baranski, Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu.

It was released just over 20 years ago, on 27 December 2002. It tells the story of fame-crazed murderers Roxie Hart (Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), who seek the assistance of flashy lawyer Billy Flynn (Gere) to keep them away from the gallows.

The film also won six out of the twelve Academy Awards it was nominated for at the 2003 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

BOOK REVIEW

"Lucy Mushita's book highlights the pain of early childhood marriage, which is still prevalent in Zimbabwe – and, indeed, other places across Africa. The driving factors are poverty and patriarchal tradition."
