In an interview with the well-known Russo Brothers, News24's Herman Eloff learns that SA's very own Charlize Theron nearly led one of Netflix's most expensive film projects to date.

Netflix's action-packed new flick, The Gray Man, starring Hollywood heavyweights Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six and Chris Evans as the villainous Lloyd Hansen, almost saw Charlize Theron take on the lead role.

"At one point, there was an idea, coming off of Charlize's George Miller film [Mad Max], to approach her to play the lead," the Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe, told News24 during an international press tour for the film last week.

The directing duo - known for their work on films like Captain America, Avengers, and Netflix's Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth - said Charlize was originally top of their list to drive what is now the streaming giant's most expensive film made to date.

"I remember having, just as a writer, some initial discussions with her about what we could do with the script to alter the lead character," Joe said.

The Gray Man follows a covert CIA operation that recruits inmates and turns them into agency-sanctioned merchants of death under the watchful eye of handler Donald Fitzroy, played by Billy Bob Thornton.

The Gray Man is now streaming on Netflix.

REVIEW

"Part 1 is a great set-up, with tight storytelling, plot twists and turns, and ending on a cliff-hanger. There's a little bit of everything interspersed with the action; there is also some romance and poignant dramatic scenes. I can't wait to see what comes next when we get Part 2."
