Digital voice assistants have long been a part of the mobile device ecosystem. And although they've been lampooned by frustrated users — oftentimes for their inability to carry out every day tasks — recent technological advancements in search functionality and language understanding have vastly improved the accuracy and convenience of voice assistants. This in turn has led to a rapid increase in adoption and use of voice search functions. 
Last year marked the tipping point of mainstream adoption of intelligent voice assistants in the US, according to a new report released by AI-platform development startup, MindMeld. More than half (62%) of smartphone users say they use their device's voice assistant function. Here are the key findings from MindMeld's Q1 2016 report: - Voice assistant adoption is growing rapidly: Just over a quarter (28%) of voice use adoption occurred in the past six months.
- Voice assistants are being used more: 55% of respondents reported using voice assistants regularly (either daily or weekly). This is up six percentage points sequentially from 49% during the previous quarter.
- Users want voice assistants built into apps. More than 40% of app users want apps they use to incorporate voice assistants, including shopping, travel, video, and local service apps. Voice assistants are particularly sought after among music apps users, with around 50% of users wanting voice functionality within these apps.
However, although the adoption and use of voice assistants is increasing, there are a number of barriers in the way of further growth. Respondents to the survey desired improvements in automatic speech recognition and natural language understanding. Users want the ability to speak candidly and naturally to their assistants, with 44% and 28% of respondents saying there is room for improvement in these areas, respectively. Furthermore, 72% of respondents suggested they would increase engagement with voice assistants as core functions are improved. Nevertheless, the use of digital voice assistants within apps will become increasingly important in the future, especially as smartphones integrate with IoT devices, such as home hubs and connected cars.
