The first week of Derek Chauvin's murder trial has ended testimony from the Minneapolis Police Department's most senior officer.

Lt. Richard Zimmerman was asked whether Chauvin was right to press his knee into George Floyd's neck, even as Floyd lay handcuffed face down. "Putting your knee on the neck for that amount of time — it’s just uncalled for. I saw no reason why the officers felt they were in danger."

The defense argues that Chauvin was acting within his training.

Minnesota has been giving nearly 54,000 COVID shots a day over the past week.

With the record high vaccination numbers, nearly a quarter of Minnesota residents have now been fully inoculated.

But the number of new cases continues to climb with more than 2,500 reported today — the second straight day of cases above 2,000. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 and the test positivity rate are also trending upward.
