Partner Profile: Krousar Thmey

Skateistan works with multiple partners worldwide in order to engage with more children and increase the accessibility of our programs. This months Partner Profile is focused on a partnership we have in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with Krousar Thmeya local NGO offering education for deaf and blind children. Our Educators travel to their deaf school once a week to run Skate and Create sessions. The students have been really enjoying our programs, plus our staff have been enjoying learning sign language from them.

Programs Update: Road Safety Curriculum

Road safety is a big issue in Cambodia and many children lack the awareness or education to keep them safe. But at Skateistan, in the classroom and skatepark, we teach our students about road safety to prepare them in their everyday lives. Our Educators also take these lessons to Outreach sessions for local children (as pictured here) in both Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, to learn these valuable lessons.

Citizen Profile: Camila*, Skate and Create (Mazar)

This month's Citizen Profile features a deaf student who attends Skateistan through a partnership in Mazar. Sabina, an Educator, interviewed Camila* who has been coming to Skateistan for two years to participate in the Skate and Create program. They conducted the interview in Afghan Sign Language, which Sabina learned by studying with teachers at Camila’s* school for the deaf funded by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan.

Spread the Shred: "Get Used To It"

Last year, Blam Studio traveled to Johannesburg to attend the opening of our Skate School. Through a new series, "Get Used To It", they explore the topic of gender inequality in South Africa, and interview our students and staff to show how we are empowering girls through skateboarding and education in Johannesburg.

Our Global Community: Citizen of the Month

We are excited to announce this month's Citizen as Manuel Bergler, who has been a very important member of our community for many years now. Since 2012 Manuel has been our IT Officer - handling the day to day IT needs at all our local Skate Schools and at HQ. There is always a lot going on worldwide and technology is essential to keep our community connected. Among other things Manuel is to thank for our incredible new website (along with designer Jan Rosstrom), which he built from scratch! We can not thank him enough for his hard work and help over the last five years. Manuel is moving on from his official role at Skateistan this month, but he will forever be a part of our global community as a Citizen. We wish you all the best for your future endeavors Manuel!
