As a photographer, Christian von Alvensleben has captured many of his formative encounters in impressive portraits. They are intense images of personalities who meant something to him, who moved him. In these pictures he allows us to participate in the direct interchange of the gaze, enables us to feel the tense connection between the photographer and the other. Thanks to his versatility in styling and image composition, Christian von Alvensleben does justice to the subjects portrayed and confers the mark of his unique pictorial language on the motifs. We are able to view 109 photographs from a copious body of work and, above all, an eventful life. These are portraits incorporating numerous implicit stories and arousing our curiosity. The selection shown here was created between 1967 and 1988 and gives us an insight into a good two decades of advanced table culture which often has an aura of timelessness today. We see a photographer whose immense pleasure and ambition lie in realizing the greatest possible degree of creative freedom even in his commissioned work. His tables are pure joie de vivre and embody originality whether they are lavishly decorated in a baroque style or reduced in a very cool way. Visual pleasure is guaranteed.
