Biography
I am a contemporary realist painter who enjoys still life and portrait painting. I have been creating art for many years but more recently have been able forgo my former professions as designer and then teacher, to pursue fine art as a career.
My interest in oil painting came many years after graduating from the University of Maryland as a graphic design major. Watercolor was my initial medium of choice and I sold works of art mostly through word of mouth in my earlier years while also working and raising my family. Later, I sought to hone the oil painting skills I had learned in collegeas I made plans to devote more time to painting as a career. Taking classes locally and doing much research online has enabled me to grow as a fine artist.
A fondness for still life painting developed gradually over time when I found that I could greatly increase my skill level through the execution of small works. Decorative and organic objects are handy items and enable me to continue painting with endless possibilities for subject matter. In addition, the principles of design. . . emphasis, harmony, repetition, etc. can be conveniently executed through the arrangement of small objects. What I learn from these exercises is carried over into larger paintings and in my portrait and figurative work.
Painting draws me into a visual world of peace and tranquility. There is an inner beauty and emotion that I wrestle intuitively to display. Intrigued by the nostalgia of Pre-Raphaelite art, I try to bring a little romance to my figurative paintings and sometimes a subtle narrative. The works of the Dutch Golden Age inspire my work with still life though I do work with more modern themes and lighting situations. Emphasis is a tool I often utilize as I am intuitively drawn to depict simple compositions. Accentuating the subject through a careful arrangement of glowing light is vital. The painting methods employed are a combination of wet on wet and a more traditional method of layered glazing.
