Earlier this year, Church Law & Tax conducted a nationwide survey to learn more about fraud in the church.
Of the more than 700 church leaders who participated, we learned that nearly one-third have served in congregations that suffered from some form of financial misconduct. Half occurred within just the past 10 years and the known financial losses often ran in the tens of thousands of dollars, and sometimes topped $100,000.
No type of church was immune. Fraud happened in small churches and big ones. It occurred in city churches and rural ones. And it was perpetrated by people known, loved, and trusted in their congregations.
