A couple weeks ago, a pastor shared an experience on Facebook that is almost sure to be repeated in other churches. He received a letter from a family that was leaving because they preferred a different church’s live stream.
I suppose it’s not a lot different than the church-hopping stories before the pandemic. But now, it’s just easier to do. Another church is just a click away.
That incident has a lot of implications, but one is clear: the moment we’re in has shown just how important church membership is. When someone merely attends, they’re far more likely to leave when things get difficult or another church’s offerings are more appealing. But members are invested.
This week, we’re featuring our Maximizing Church Membership. It will help you design a membership process that communicate what your church believes, how your church governs, expectations of members, and a host of other facts and rules about your community's life. Also, if you’ve ever shrunk back from leading, you’ll be encouraged by this reflection from Mandy Smith: Who Am I That I Should Lead?
