The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed support Thursday for efforts to revamp downtown Salt Lake City, which could include an NHL hockey arena.
Utah lawmakers passed legislation that would allow Salt Lake City to create a downtown revitalization zone. A bill titled “Capital City Reinvestment Zone Amendments,” which described the zone as a “sports and entertainment project area,” passed the Senate this week and was sent to the House.
On Thursday, the House passed a new version of HB272 that changed “sports and entertainment project area” to “revitalization zone” and “reinvestment” in the title to “revitalization.”
“The aim of this bill is to revitalize downtown. As we all know, there are concerns with how our capital city looks and is presented to the world,” said Rep. Jon Hawkins, R-Pleasant Grove.
