Fault Protection Solution Defends 
High-Speed USB Ports
    
With the MAX22505 ±40 V high-speed USB fault protector from Maxim Integrated Products, system designers can now eliminate USB port damage from all faults, including ground potential differences, up to ±40 V without the trade-offs required by competing solutions. It protects data and power lines from industrial equipment powered at 24 VAC and 40 VDC, while also reducing solution size by more than 50% for industrial voltage applications.
As industrial environments adopt USB to provide faster communication for applications such as real-time diagnostics, programming/service ports on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) or supporting camera vision systems, USB ports require fault protection from overvoltage and ground differences while balancing the need to support high-speed data rates up to 480 Mbps.

Damage to both the host and device side can occur in these systems, requiring a solution that achieves high levels of fault protection. Existing USB fault protection solutions on the market today compromise either USB operating speed or voltage/current limit protection on a device's data and power lines. That all means that current solutions on the market are more costly and incapable of providing fault protection at high-speed USB performance. The MAX22505 answers this market need by combining high-speed USB fault protection (480 Mbps) for industrial voltages, while being flexible enough to support either host or device applications including USB On-The-Go (OTG). It protects equipment from overvoltage or negative voltage on power and data lines, as well as ground potential differences between devices.

DC-DC Converters Gear Up for Industrial 
and Rail Applications

Murata has launched its latest encapsulated DC-DC converters, designed specifically for use in industrial and railway applications. The 150 W IRH series from Murata Power Solutions provides power conversion efficiency in an industry-standard half-brick pinout, using the latest component and packaging technologies in a fixed-frequency switching power supply architecture.
Murata's 150 W IRH series converter modules have been designed and tested to meet the requirements of EN50155. To improve thermal management, the IRH series is available with standard and flanged baseplate options and with DOSA or alternate industry standard pinout options. The modules' encapsulated circuit design makes them shock- and vibration-tolerant, with lower EMI and improved thermal performance. With these features, the IRH series offers the user flexibility and reliability in design implementation.

The IRH series provide a wide 3:1 VIN range of 57.6 VDC to 160 VDC that meet the requirements of the EN50155 standard for railway applications for a nominal VIN of 96 VDC and 110 VDC, including brownout and transient conditions. Standard features include on/off logic control and protection against short circuits, overvoltage and over-temperature. The IRH topology supports a pre-biased output at start-up, eliminating the reverse currents during system start and shutdown that can damage critical circuitry.

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced three new digital-input Class-D audio amplifiers that enable engineers to deliver high-resolution audio in more smart-home and voice-enabled applications. By combining high integration, real-time protection and new modulation schemes, TI's new audio devices enable designers to reduce board space and overall bill of material (BOM) cost. These new amplifiers are designed for personal electronics applications with any power level, including smart speakers, sound bars, TVs, notebooks, projectors and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications.

Claimed by TI to be the first wide-supply I/V sense amplifier, the TAS2770 (shown) offers state-of-the art, real-time speaker protection when paired with TI Smart Amp algorithms. The amplifier monitors loudspeaker behavior and increases loudness while improving audio quality in applications requiring small speakers. The TAS2770 is an audio front end (AFE) that combines a digital microphone input with a powerful I/V sense amplifier. The device captures voice and ambient acoustic information for echo cancellation or noise reduction in voice-enabled applications. The TAS2770 monitors battery voltage and automatically decreases gain when audio signals exceed a set threshold, helping designers avoid clipping and extend playback time through 
end-of-charge battery conditions without degrading sound quality.
