| | Semtech and Imprint Energy Team up for IoT Battery Development Effort Semtech and Imprint Energy have announced a collaboration to accelerate the widespread deployment of IoT devices. Imprint Energy will design and produce ultra-thin, flexible printed batteries that are especially designed to power IoT devices integrated with Semtech's LoRa devices and wireless RF technology (LoRa). LoRa technology, with its long-range, low-power capabilities, is regarded by many as the defacto platform for building low-power wide area networks (LPWAN). To help accelerate a next generation of battery technology, Semtech has invested in Imprint Energy. The companies are working closely to target applications that have the potential to create entirely new markets. The Imprint Energy battery enables new applications that have a thin and small form factor. Due to the integrated manufacturing process, the batteries are low cost to produce making high volume deployments feasible. . CONTINUE READING New Consortium to Focus on Industry 4.0 Growth Advantech has announced that it has partnered with Mitsubishi Electric, Omron, NEC, IBM Japan and Oracle Japan to establish the "Edgecross Consortium".The group's goal is to overcome boundaries between companies and industries in order to realize collaboration between factory automation (FA) and IT. The objective is to create new value centered on edge computing. A joint press conference to announce the establishment of the Edgecross Consortium was held on November 6, 2017, in Tokyo, Japan, and the establishment of the consortium is planned for November 29, 2017. The Edgecross Consortium will focus on the easy realization of FA and IT collaboration through its open software platform ("Edgecross Software Platform"), which is based on edge computing. By residing on the edge layer, the Edgecross Software Platform facilitates connectivity between factory shop floors and value chains. In addition, user applications can be easily created and shared on the edge to realize various IoT utilization purposes. The consortium aims to co-develop the platform specifications for and achieve certification of Edgecross products. It will also do co-marketing promotion and global co-selling for consortium members. Advantech is organizing the IoT Co-Creation Summit in November 2018, in Suzhou, China. The summit will seek to foster the three phases of growth brought about by IoT and to demonstrate the co-creation achievement of IoT WISE-PaaS, EISs and SRPs. CONTINUE READING |

App Enables Remote Monitoring and Servicing of IoT Devices
PTC has announced the launch of the ThingWorx Asset Advisor app for service to accelerate its customers' service transformation initiatives. ThingWorx Asset Advisor for Service enables remote monitoring and servicing of assets deployed in the field. Built on PTC's leading ThingWorx industrial innovation platform, ThingWorx Asset Advisor for Service is a role-based app for service managers and technicians that is fast to deploy, scalable, flexible and customizable.
The app provides visibility to connected assets with key role-intelligent information, offering insight into the operating condition of the asset, alerts on operating anomalies and remote service for the connected assets. ThingWorx Asset Advisor for Service follows PTC's launch of the ThingWorx Asset Advisor app for Manufacturing this past June at LiveWorx17 and continues PTC's commitment to helping industrial companies simplify their digital transformation efforts.

Battery-Free IoT Start Up Raises $19 Million
Wiliot, a fabless semiconductor start-up company, has closed an investment round with Qualcomm Ventures and M Ventures. The announcement was made in conjunction with the opening of the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) Conference in Amsterdam where the company made its first public presentation to leaders in the packaging industry. The latest investment round comes on the heels of a Series A Round financing effort that yielded $14 million with strategic technology investors Grove Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners and 83North Venture Capital. This first round closed in January, the month Wiliot was founded. In all, Wiliot has raised a total of $19 million in its first 10 months as a semiconductor company. Wiliot, whose research and development arm is based in Israel, is on course to develop a wireless technology that will eliminate a reliance on batteries or wired power to vastly accelerate the Internet of Things with the vision of creating a world of "Smart Everything." The new technology, which powers itself by harvesting energy from radio waves, enables a sensor as small as a fingernail, as thin as a sheet of paper, and an order of magnitude reduction in price and cost of maintenance.
