The Development of the Internet of Medical Things

The world of technology is rapidly moving into places that have been up until now labeled in a kind of catch-all phraseology. Take the Internet of Things (IoT), for instance, up until now the term IoT meant all types of connected devices. Now there is Industrial IoT (IIoT), Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT), and now the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT).

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is the network of interconnected medical devices, hardware infrastructure, and software applications used in the information technology of healthcare.

Sometimes this interconnected ecosystem had been referred to as the IoT in Healthcare. IoMT allows wireless and remote devices to communicate in a secure setting over the internet, in order to allow for the rapid and flexible analysis of medical data, usually from a patient to a medical facility. According to the latest market data, IoMT is a major factor in market development, in the healthcare markets. Deloitte's recent survey on the healthcare market reported that IoMT is expected to grow from $41 billion in 2017 to $158 billion this year (2022).

IoMT is focused on specific healthcare and medical applications. There is a wide range of applications in this market sector, in-home, on-body, community, in-hospital, and many research areas. There are still some unique regulatory, technical, privacy, and legal challenges because of the wide-ranging number of stakeholders involved in the ecosystem. There is no denying, IoMT is here to stay, irreversible and undeniable.
