Renesas Radiation-Hardened ICs go into Space Onboard Artemis 1 Mission

Renesas announced that hundreds of its radiation-hardened (rad-hard) integrated circuits (ICs) go into space onboard the Artemis 1. The total number of ICs included 50 different part numbers and was launched into space on November 16.

Intersil-brand, rad-hard ICs work with battery management systems, the launch abort system, and RS-25 engine control electronics on the Space Launch System (SLS). The SLS propelled the mission into space on the most powerful rocket ever launched.

MCUs in Space

It's well known that Microcontrollers (MCUs) are used in aerospace equipment, but until now it wasn't really talked about on missions such as Artemis 1. The MCU is often overshadowed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU) in a computer.

It is now a thing, with the rapidly advancing complexity of MCUs, that it should be noted, they are all over the Rockets, Capsule, and control systems of the Artemis 1 mission.

The MCU often passed over for more glamorous tech equipment is a force unto itself, today.

From highly complex navigation in the Orion Capsule to precision control systems, the MCU is running the show.

There are hundreds of these tiny workhorses onboard spacecraft, making flight calculations and working alongside systems and devices.

Automotive manufacturers are calling for enormous increases in MCU production, and the marketplace is growing at a rapid pace.

Space and automotive applications are headed in a direction where MCUs will do most of the heavy lifting in control systems. From safety, security, and alignment with more complex software-defined systems, the MCU is developing into an irreplaceable device in today's electronic marketplace.
