The Test and Measurement Industry is Seeing Transformative Movement

The landscape for the testing and measurement (T&M) sector is being transformed. The different operational platforms are changing rapidly. The main forces in the sector are the Internet of Things (IoT), the mm-wave frequencies (millimeter-wave), and 5G connectivity. These forces are causing substantial changes in testing equipment requirements as well as making inroads to vendors.

The T&M industry is explosive right now, generating around $28.13 billion in 2021. The advent of such technologies as printed cells in batteries and the foil printed sensors to help regulate temperature and pressure inside the battery while in use, are running away with the market.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been working on a detector that can rapidly identify biological agents. Named, The RAAD it is a portable biological agent detector. It can let the operator know almost immediately with an alarm if there is a threat-like particles in the air.

There are food-borne illness detectors, and sensor measurements of large amounts of physical data, including images through cameras in IoT systems, and the transfer of that data through 5G super-fast networks.

The need to design equipment that can keep up with the rapidly changing landscape of technology is paramount. It is opening doors for vendors, and buyers who want to enhance the industry. The markets are reacting with a full-blown transformation, in areas that have often time seen little or no change or recognition.

Innovativelab, and Perdue University, are both coming forward with extensive transformative measurement systems in the areas of healthcare and automotive innovation.

In 2015, the T&M industry globally was at $2 billion, and projected $2.4 billion for the global industry for 2021. The reality today is that in 2021, the industry was at $28.13 billion and the CAGR for the global measurement and test equipment industry is 5.2%, growing to $46.64 billion by 2031. This forecast could be lower than the actual revenue increase from 2021 to 2031.
