City officials keep faith in violence prevention work after 'terrible weekend'

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

With a man found dead in a neighborhood street on Tuesday, East Baton Rouge Parish saw a sixth person lose their life in a shooting since early Sunday morning.

A resident reacted with shock to the sudden violence, describing the area as peaceful. "This street, we don't have nothing on this street," she said.

Sateria Alexander of the city’s Community Street Teams Unit said recent shootings aren’t a certain indicator of what’s to come, adding that she believes the city’s violence prevention efforts continue to be effective in lowering Baton Rouge’s overall crime rates.

New Saints quarterback Derek Carr finally got to work with some of his teammates on Tuesday as the team held its first day of organized training activities.

New Orleans is only Carr’s second team in 10 years in the NFL; he was released by Las Vegas in February and signed with the Saints in March. The veteran said Tuesday was "a good start."

“But as soon as you have a good start, it’s all about going up now. Wherever you set that bar, you never want to go backward.”

The allure of McDonald Pharmacy in the small East Feliciana Parish town of Jackson is a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. It's not every day you get to belly up to an old-fashioned ice cream counter, the aroma of waffle cones wafting through the air.

Its official name, Ole McDonald's Ice Cream Shoppe.

Everyone, it seems, stops for ice cream before leaving the pharmacy.
