Rallying from Isolation, Loneliness & Depression to Connection, Contribution & Joy

Policy Expert Tackles Loneliness at HEADS UP Summit

Experts agree that isolation and loneliness are epidemic in Canada and beyond, with rates of depression, anxiety, substance use, and suicidal ideation rising across all demographics. The resulting impacts on individuals, families, workplaces, and communities are serious and require urgent, innovative, and collaborative attention. To that end, the Fresh Outlook Foundation recently hosted a virtual HEADS UP! Community Mental Health Summit called VITAL LINKS: Rallying from Isolation, Loneliness & Depression to Connection, Contribution & Joy.

Dr. Mary Bartram, Policy Director of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, shares insights and ideas about how to move all levels of government in Canada toward policies and programs that minimize isolation and loneliness and the mental health challenges they trigger and/or compound. She also shares examples from countries that are addressing loneliness innovatively at all scales and from all angles. Mary shares this conversation about resilience with a clinical/research psychiatrist, two Indigenous mental health professionals and changemakers, and a seniors’ advocate, youth volunteer, and chatbot designer.
