To celebrate 20 years of the Aspen Ideas Festival, we’re looking back at some of the most unforgettable and noteworthy moments from the event. At the 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival, civil rights icon John Lewis reflected on his lifelong struggle for civil and human rights, meditating on the distance traveled since the days of Jim Crow and segregation and the work still to do. “You have a moral obligation, a mission, and a mandate,” Lewis said, “to push and do everything you can to leave this little piece of real estate we call America a little greener, a little cleaner, and a little more peaceful for

Katharine Hayhoe on Fighting Climate Change

“In my mind, what is climate change other than a failure to love?” asks atmospheric scientist Katharine Hayhoe. She has co-authored the past four U.S. National Climate Assessment reports, and is the chief scientist at The Nature Conservancy and a professor at Texas Tech University. Hayhoe is an expert not only in climate science, but also in how best to communicate it — her various roles means she talks to people from all walks of life about how they’re feeling the effects of a changing planet.
