The Wake Up

TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 2024

At 3:13 p.m. Monday, Cleveland boasted clear skies for the big eclipse show.

Around Northeast Ohio, where schools, city halls and plenty of businesses were closed, neighbors marked the eclipse with backyard bonfires and lawn chairs. Families and friends gathered in parks, sports fields, even Boston Mills ski resort.

Armed with eclipse glasses, we all came outside to look up. To watch the moon block the sun and the Earth take on the glow of gloaming.

In what was for many a once-in-a-lifetime event of totality, the temperature dropped, street lights flicked on and watchers celebrated with shouts, firecrackers and horns.

Of course, it’s tough to photograph the sun. (Yet we tried.) Thankfully our photographers captured magnificent shots at the Great Lakes Science Center, over the downtown skyline and at Progressive Field, where the Guardians had their home opener.

We hope you enjoyed the spectacle.
