Parking meters: The city of Cleveland is seeking to replace its system of parking meters with a new, more modern “smart” system that can take credit cards or payment through an app, Lucas Daprile reports. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb touted the new plan as “customer friendly and convenient,” according to a news release. City officials are “looking at” whether this could raise parking costs, and spokeswoman Marie Zickefoose said the city’s on-street parking is “below market rate.” Governor’s race: Gov. Mike DeWine and Democratic opponent Nan Whaley on Thursday perhaps came as close as they’ll get to a debate this campaign season – they spoke in the same building on the same day. DeWine and Whaley discussed children’s issues during an appearance at the Vote For Ohio’s Kids leadership forum at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, reports Jeremy Pelzer. Participating in debates was once considered a requisite part of running for governor, but DeWine is on track to become the second straight incumbent governor to turn down debates altogether. Supreme Court: While much of the attention on this year’s races for the Ohio Supreme Court focuses on the state’s six-week abortion ban and gerrymandering, the election also comes with high stakes for state energy policy. Eye on Ohio reports several cases involving power plants, utility oversight, and clean energy development are likely to land before the state’s high court in the next two years. Marijuana pardons: Ohio politicians had divergent reactions to President Joe Biden’s Thursday afternoon decision to pardon about 6,500 people with federal convictions for simple marijuana possession and to order a federal review of its classification as a Schedule 1 drug with high potential for abuse and no medical use, Sabrina Eaton and Jeremy Pelzer report. |

Jail renovation: A recent assessment of the Cuyahoga County Jail gave the first clear picture of what a renovation could entail, but it did little to move the needle in the debate over whether it’s the better option to building a new facility. Kaitlin Durbin reports a renovation cannot accomplish every goal on the county’s wish list and there’s no estimate on how much it is likely to cost. Best high schools: Rocky River has the highest-performing high school in Ohio in terms of test scores, according to the 2022 Ohio school report cards. Zachary Smith ranks all 823 high schools to show which students performed the best on state tests. Guardians fan: Virgil Fry, 83, travels three hours from his home in Bryan, Ohio, for nearly every Guardians home game. And he has stayed in the same hotel, spanning two owners and four name changes. Mortgage rates: Interest rates on both 30-year and 15-year mortgages have more than doubled since Jan.1, and that has a huge effect on monthly payments, reports Sean McDonnell. Homebuyers are battling rising interest rates and monthly payments that are almost 50% higher. Sherwin-Williams: Sherwin-Williams on Thursday released two videos showing progress of its global headquarters in downtown Cleveland and its research and development center in Brecksville. The downtown headquarters at West Third Street and Superior Avenue just off Public Square will be 36 stories high, making it the fourth-highest building in the city, reports Megan Sims. Construction began at the end of 2021 and is projected to be completed by 2024. Mandel gift: Cleveland Clinic will receive a $30 million gift from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation to help Clinic CEO Dr. Tom Mihaljevic — and future Clinic leaders — develop innovative ideas. Julie Washington reports the gift will attach an endowed fund for innovation to the position of Clinic CEO. COVID-19 cases: The weekly number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio has dropped below 10,000 for the first time since April. The new cases dropped to 9,997 this week, from 12,101 last week, Gretchen Cuda Kroen reports. |

Bottle throwing: A Cleveland lawyer was charged Thursday in connection with throwing a water bottle at Browns owner Jimmy Haslam during the final moments of the team’s loss against the New York Jets in September, Olivia Mitchell reports. Jeffrey Miller, 51, of Rocky River, was accused of disorderly conduct by intoxication, a misdemeanor, for the incident that occurred at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sept. 18. Officer shooting: The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the 38-year-old man who was shot and killed Wednesday by Springfield Township police officers at his home. Kaylee Remington reports Jeremy McCracken died from a gunshot wound to the torso. |
