Closing schools? The East Baton Rouge school board could consider it.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board is gathering for a retreat Saturday, with school facilities among the discussion points — including possibly closing schools with declining enrollment. Board President Carla Powell-Lewis says the board is trying to figure out the best way to approach the controversial topic.

Two-thirds of East Baton Rouge Parish public schools have lost students compared with before the pandemic.

A meeting concerning a proposed Air Products facility in Ascension Parish drew more than 200 people and showcased a stark divide between regional business leaders and local residents who say they don't want the plant despite its economic benefits.
