CMS begins oncology bundles

On July 1, nearly 200 group practices began a five-year demonstration program of CMS’s Oncology Care Model. The model’s goal is to improve the quality and decrease the costs of cancer care nationwide.

Joint Commission unveils revised scoring system

The Joint Commission's post-survey process just became a bit easier for visual learners. In May, The Joint Commission unveiled its new hospital scoring methodology called the Survey Analysis for Evaluating Risk (SAFER) matrix. The matrix is a 3 x 3 grid with the X-axis ranking the likelihood of a problem occurring and the Y-axis measuring how widespread the issue is.

Study: Restricting access to lethal means cuts suicide rates

A recent study published in Lancet Psychiatry compared data from 164 studies related to suicidal behavior to find means of prevention. The study found that restricting a person’s access to lethal means was the most effective way to stop suicides.

Researchers find that checklists and error tracking are better ways to train surgeons

A new study has found that incorporating error tracking with checklists can give a more accurate determination of a trainee surgeon’s skill level.
