New data show uptick in home health and hospice admissions in early 2018


Admissions for both home health and hospice patients saw an increase in the first quarter of 2018, when compared with the same time in 2017, according to data and performance analytics company Excel Health.

CMS on Aug. 31 posted the final interpretive guidelines for the revised Home Health Conditions of Participation (CoPs).

AARP has published it’s most recent volume of its profiles of Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS), entitle “Across the States.” The purpose of Across the States is to provide these data across all states because the United States does not have a national LTSS system. Given the aging of the population, rising demand for LTSS, and high cost of services, these data are essential to improving the lives of those who need LTSS and their family caregivers.

 

Justice Department announces expansion of Medicare Fraud Strike Force


The HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) has announced the formation of a 10th area where regional Medicare Fraud Strike Force Teams will operate: New Jersey/Philadelphia. The team will focus on health care fraud and illegal opioid prescriptions, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Industry trends: Emphasis on shorter lengths of stay may cause identity crisis among SNFs

 

Beneficiary enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans is on the rise, increasing from 5.3 million in 2013 to 19 million in 2017, according to information published by PLOS Medicine. A study released by the nonprofit advocacy organization in June compared postacute rehabilitation use, length of stay, and out-comes experienced by Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) and Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries with hip fractures in the United States. The results? Although MA beneficiaries experienced shorter lengths of stay and less rehab, their return to the community was more successful and their readmission rates were significantly lower compared to the FFS beneficiaries.
