Staff training: Implementing restorative nursing

Restorative nursing has been around for decades. Since the 1987 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, the skilled nursing sector has been charged with maintaining or im-proving the health and well-being of the residents it serves. Restorative nursing programs involve activities tar-geted to maintain or improve mobility and range of mo-tion (ROM) of residents. These programs can be defined as active and passive ROM, communication, splint or brace use, prosthesis care, bed mobility, transfer, dressing and grooming, eating and swallowing, ambulation, and toileting. It is our duty as caregivers to ensure the best possible quality of care for our residents. CMS lists out from start to finish what is required with each restorative nursing program. CMS also provides guidance on its ex-pectations for preventing resident decline.
