Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released refreshed data for the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS) for calendar years 2017 and 2018, called the T-MSIS Analytic Files (TAF).

TAF are a research-optimized version of T-MSIS data and serve as a data source tailored to meet the broad research needs of the Medicaid and Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP) data user community. These refreshed files include 1) improved state data quality; 2) new data on providers and managed care plans; and 3) updated data on Medicaid and CHIP enrollment, demographics, service utilization, and payments. The availability of T-MSIS data is essential to allow monitoring and oversight of Medicaid and CHIP programs, to enable evaluation of demonstrations authorized under section 1115 of the Social Security Act, and to calculate quality measures and other metrics. External researchers can obtain access to T-MSIS data by submitting a request to the CMS Research Data Assistance Center (ResDAC)andsigning a CMS data use agreement containing strict beneficiary privacy and data security requirements.
