Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the following guidance and data related to application determinations, renewal strategies, and application processing times:

  • The Ensuring Timely and Accurate Medicaid and CHIP Eligibility Determinations at Application informational bulletin and slide deck outline important strategies and tools to facilitate faster application processing and ensure timely access to coverage for eligible individuals through Medicaid and the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP). These resources are especially crucial as individuals who were procedurally disenrolled following the resumption of Medicaid and CHIP eligibility renewals last spring reapply for coverage. CMS strongly urges states to review their current processes and timelines for processing applications and implement strategies CMS to help eligible people obtain timely access to comprehensive health care coverage.
  • This informational bulletin announces a further extension of section (e)(14) waiver strategies, through June 30, 2025, to help people stay covered as states continue renewals and update their income and eligibility determination systems. CMS continues to urge states to adopt these waiver strategies, which reduce red tape, help people navigate renewals, and are proven to help more eligible people maintain coverage. In addition, this informational bulletin provides information about how certain other temporary COVID-19-related flexibilities can also be extended.
  • The Quarterly Medicaid and CHIP Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) Application Processing Time Report for October December 2023 shows the average number of days elapsed between the date states received an initial application and the date a final eligibility determination was conducted. Prior reports can be found on Medicaid.gov.
