Together, Medicaid and the Childrens Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are the largest payer of mental health services in the US. Almost 40% of Medicaid and CHIP beneficiaries experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders (SUD). From September 2021 to June 2023 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) facilitated the Improving Behavioral Health Follow-up Care learning collaborative. In follow up to the learning collaborative, CMS is releasing a set of QI Tools designed to help states improve Behavioral Health follow-up care including: a driver diagram/change ideas table, a measurement strategy, as well as a highlights brief that gives an overview of projects states completed as part of the Improving Behavioral Health Follow-up Care Affinity Group.
