HMV administrators confirm offers have been made for the business HMV, of course, fell into administration for the second time over the Christmas break. Hilco, which bought the retail firm after it went into administration first time round in 2013, said various factors were behind its decision to bail on the business. This included steep declines in DVD sales, the high costs of business rates on many of its stores and a tough Christmas quarter for UK high street retail across the board. Although the record industry is not quite so spooked this time about the prospect of losing its last national high street chain - compared to its reaction back in 2013 - obviously no one actually wants to see that happen. If HMV were to shut its doors entirely, that would almost certainly escalate the ongoing decline of the CD format, which is still bringing in decent money for many UK labels despite streaming now being the dominant revenue stream. Administrator Will Wright at KPMG gave little information yesterday about who the possible bidders to buy and rescue the HMV business are. He said in a statement: "We can confirm that a number of offers on various bases have been received and we now need to evaluate these further over the coming days. Given the commercially sensitive nature of this process, we will not be providing further detail at this time". It's generally thought that, even if a buyer can be found, HMV's network of stores will be cut again if and when the business comes out of administration, as happened when Hilco took over in 2013. Any new owners would also almost certainly be looking for assistance from their suppliers in the music, home video and gaming industries to help minimise risks and overheads. As we wait to find out who the bidders are and what plans they might have for HMV, Wright said the administrators would "continue to endeavour to trade all stores while discussions with all the relevant stakeholders continue". As for keeping the doors open while those discussions go through the motions, he added: "Since our appointment as joint administrators, we have received significant support from key stakeholders, including employees, suppliers and creditors, as we have endeavoured to trade the HMV business. We'd like to thank everyone for their support during this time, in what remain challenging circumstances".
The Underworld partners with Dice "Camden is known for its amazing musical heritage but we're not stuck in the past", says the venue's Jon Vyner. "Music fans coming through our doors are tech-savvy and used to organising their lives through their smartphones. Ticketing should be no different. App-based tickets makes it easier for fans to discover our events and book tickets hassle-free". Meanwhile Dice's Chief Revenue Officer Russ Tannen reminds us that mobile-ticketing aids anti-touting activity. He says: "With Dice, venues have complete control over their tickets and know that they are going to real fans, not touts". Of the new deal, he goes on: "Signing The Underworld as a partner will bring a load more heavy music to Dice fans week-in, week-out. It's not just guitar bands either, last year The Underworld put on some amazing alt rap shows with artists like Slowthai, Scarlxrd and $uicideboy$. This is a venue pushing live music forward". Don't forget that Threatin will also be making their triumphant return to the venue later this year too. Though they might set a fake ticketing app to sell tickets to their show.

Hozier announces new album "I'm THRILLED to announce my new album 'Wasteland, Baby!'", says the musician. "The album has been over a year in the making and it's a pleasure to finally turn out my pockets and share the work. I want to sincerely thank fans and listeners for their continued support in between the records. See you out on the road soon". 'Nina Cried Power' is the subject of the latest episode of the 'Song Exploder' podcast, where Hozier pulls apart and explains the process behind the creation of the song. You should absolutely listen to it. 'Wasteland, baby!' is set for release on 1 Mar. -------------------------------------------------- James Morrison announces new album, releases Joss Stone collaboration "I always love working with people, especially when they have a wicked voice like Joss", says Morrison of the new song. "She's from the same musical heritage as me. I'm excited to celebrate soul music with another artist who is recognised for soul". Watch the video for the song here. With the album set for release on 8 Mar, Morrison has also announced that his first UK tour for three years will start later the same month. Fabric announces 20th anniversary parties and more Fabric's social media accounts and website were wiped earlier this week and - to the alarm of some passers by - the physical club was boarded up too. Subsequently two large white arrows were painted on the black boards around the venue pointing to a message hinting of something to come. Now the club has finally revealed what's going on, announcing this morning that it will be hosting a special series of nights between now and October to mark the end of its second decade in business. "Many of you will be wondering what this means, why we boarded up and repainted parts of the club and why we deleted our online presence this week", reads a statement. "In 2019 we celebrate our 20th anniversary, and while to many this would present an opportunity to reflect on the past, we see it as an important opportunity to look to the future". It continues: "Since opening our doors for the first time in 1999 we have always put our focus on running a space that would become a home for expression and creativity in London. Artists and dancers from across the globe have descended our staircases and established our position as both a local dance spot and international melting pot. As we enter our 20th year, we'll be celebrating our anniversary by refreshing and building upon everything that's helped us reach where we are today". So, yeah, there will be these 20 parties, the first of which will feature extended sets from Lee Burridge, Bonobo, Tale Of Us, Fuse, John Digweed and The Martinez Brothers. That's not all though. Oh no, don't be thinking that's all. Things kick off tonight with a free party, starting at 7pm, where Fabric will introduce two new resident DJs, Anna Wall and Bobby. They will be regulars at the club from today onwards, in addition to founding residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis. The club has also announced a new mix compilation series, 'Fabric Presents', which will come out quarterly and replace the recently retired monthly Fabriclive series. The first edition of 'Fabric Presents' will be mixed by Bonobo, with release details still to be announced. Fabriclive is not dead as a brand though, because it will be part of two London festivals this summer. With more announcements about anniversary shenanigans still to come, the club concludes its statement: "We want to say thank you to everyone that's been part of this journey over the past two decades. So much of the world surrounding us has changed in this timespan, but your love for us has always been unparalleled. From the celebratory times to our most challenging moments, it's your support that's built our legacy". Here are the headliners for the first of the 20th anniversary nights: 27 Jan: Lee Burridge (extended set) -------------------------------------------------- The Antlers announce Hospice tenth anniversary shows The band's Peter Silberman says of the reissue campaign: "It will be newly pressed on double white vinyl, with deluxe artwork and packaging courtesy of the album's original artist, Zan Goodman". Adding info about the shows and the band's current line up, he goes on "we'll be playing a limited number of acoustic shows to celebrate ... but it will be a bit different this time as the core band now consists of myself and drummer Michael Lerner". Which means that longtime multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci is no longer involved. Don't worry though, they'll be getting a few guests in to make up the numbers. "Though we've pared down for the time being", he says, "these shows will feature some old friends and guests, and together we'll perform 'Hospice' in its entirety. We're truly looking forward to revisiting these old songs in a new light". Here are some dates: 19 Apr: Leeds, Belgrave Music Hall

Idles overjoyed at "vapid" BRITs nominations The band are up against Ella Mai, Jorja Smith, Mabel and Tom Walker in the public voted category - the shortlist for which is selected by the 1000+ member BRITs voting Academy, made up of industry professionals, media types and the previous year's awards nominees. Speaking to the NME, frontman Joe Talbot says: "It's a surprise [to be nominated], and something that we won't take for granted. It's easy to turn your nose up at the drab pop culture that there is at the moment, but I think it's magic. I think it's fucking stunning that we're being recognised in a vapid chamber". He adds that he's pleased to be in one of the two public voted categories at the awards, saying: "I think that's the only way we'll ever win anything like this! You know, the industry is kind of fixed in a certain way and I think people are getting bored of that. I think we are part of the change, so people are excited as using as some sort of message to the boring". Well, let's see if you get it first. At least they're not nominated in the Best Video category, where they'd definitely be dead in the water. This year's other anomaly is Aphex Twin, who goes up against Craig David, George Ezra, Giggs and Sam Smith in the British Male Solo Artist category. Find out if either take anything home on 22 Feb.
