Freestanding furniture safety tips

Did you know that young children often try to climb furniture like bookcases, drawers and wardrobes? If these items aren’t properly secured, they can tip over causing serious injuries or even death. Since 2001, at least 22 Australian children under the age of nine have died from toppling furniture or TVs.

To help prevent accidents, a new mandatory safety standard for toppling furniture came into effect on 4 May 2025. Always read and follow the safety information that comes with your furniture.

Keep your home safe with these tips:

  • Anchor heavy furniture to the wall
  • Place heavy items in the lower drawers or shelves
  • Keep tempting items (like toys) off the top of tall furniture.
