See the City's Coastal Adaptation Plan in action — 100m offshore at C.Y. O'Connor Beach, a unique engineered fringing reef is taking shape underwater. It's purpose-designed to reduce erosion and protect our invaluable natural and community assets. The trial reef will test the effectiveness of the reef as an alternative to groynes and seawalls, and will help inform the designs for the other areas of beach.
The national peak body for local governments in Australia’s outer urban growth areas has recognised the City of Cockburn for best practice design, collaboration and impact for its $6m redevelopment of the Cockburn Wetlands Precinct. The award was accepted by Cockburn CEO Tony Brun who said the City’s transformative redevelopment was underpinned by a collaborative partnership with the precinct’s tenants, who were able to remain onsite during the two-year upgrade.
Better mobile phone coverage for suburbs in the east
On Tuesday 5 March Telstra provided the City with preliminary plans for a new tower in Cockburn Central (East) that they have told us will improve mobile phone coverage for residents and businesses in Treeby, Jandakot and Cockburn Central.
We are proposing a new policy that will allow us to install amenities such as footpaths, BBQs and picnic shelters at local parks and reserves faster. The much-loved Coogee Beach Jetty is currently undergoing accessibility and maintenance improvements, which are due for completion in May. During this period the jetty will be closed to the public for periods of time but the beach remains open.
The City has a long standing relationship with the Cockburn RSL who do a fantastic job each year of honouring our ANZACs through the services they organise and hold in Cockburn. This year their ANZAC Day Dawn Service on Monday 25 April is going ahead, followed by the ANZAC Day Parade and Service.
The ANZAC youth parade has been postponed until Wednesday 9 November and will be called the Remembrance Day Youth Parade.
Henderson Waste Recovery Park will be transformed into a resource recovery precinct as part of the City's vision to lead and support our community to reduce waste. Council endorsed a $22.5m redevelopment of the site from 2023, including renaming it Cockburn Resource Recovery Precinct to recognise its role of realising the value of products traditionally seen as waste, such as steel, timber, mattresses, and electronic waste.
A second right hand turn lane is now available for motorists travelling north along North Lake Road and wanting to turn right into Farrington Drive, reducing the number of cars queueing beyond the Waverley Road intersection with North Lake Road.
The $1.3m project was funded by the City to the tune of $700,000 with the remaining $600,000 coming from the State Government’s WA Black Spot Program, which targets roads with a proven crash history.
This week we marked the delivery of 100 tonnes of food waste, collected from our most environmentally aware businesses, to Richgro's anaerobic digestion plant in Jandakot. That's equivalent to 190,000kg of CO2 emissions, or 46.5 years of electricity consumption for one Australian household.
We have partnered with Cockburn Healthy Lifestyle Service to develop a recreational soccer program designed to encourage men 18 years+ to maintain a social, active and healthy lifestyle. The program runs for 14 weeks with games played on Tuesdays, 6-8.30pm at Area 5 Football grounds in the Cockburn Bowling and Recreation Club, Yangebup. Cost is $10 per week for the 14 week season.
