Celebrate diversity at the Cultural Fair - 8 April

What makes Cockburn the best place to be? Could it be the many different cultures and communities that call it home? Our Cultural Fair event on Saturday 8 April at Harmony Oval, Atwell is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity - you could even WIN a Sherrin football signed by the Dockers!

Enjoy performances by multi-instrumentalist Si Millumby, Danilo Paz with his Brazilian, European and African sounds, and Rhianna who sings in English and Arabic. There's face painting, Ranger Red's zoo, camel rides, and a range of arts and craft activities, and with food trucks and market stalls, there will be plenty of delicious food options and unique products to browse and purchase.

We’ll also see the finalists of Cockburn's Got Talent battle it out for first place. So come down and join in the celebrations. Saturday, 8 April, 3-7pm at Harmony Oval in Atwell.

Playgrounds where everyone can play together

Did you know 65 per cent of our playgrounds have play equipment that children and families of all abilities, including those with disability or learning difficulties, can use to play together?

Some of the playgrounds make it easy for children who use wheelchairs or crutches to access the play equipment. Some also cater for children with learning difficulties and have equipment that allows them to experiment with sound, texture, or movement.

The City is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive community for everyone. So where are these playgrounds, and what equipment do they contain? Find out by clicking the button below.

Are you operating or starting a business in Cockburn?

If you are operating or thinking of starting a business out of a building in Cockburn, an occupancy permit may be required from the City before you can occupy or use the building. Buildings requiring occupancy permits can include sheds, apartments, shops, warehouses, and offices, but don’t include houses.

When is an occupancy permit required?

  • New and existing buildings (doesn’t include houses and domestic buildings)
  • New parts of an existing commercial building
  • Stages of an incomplete building
  • Unauthorised building work on a commercial building (if a permit is not received when purchasing the building, works may be unauthorised)
  • If the classification of the building has changed permanently or temporarily.

Occupancy permits are a legal requirement and help ensure your staff, clients, and contractors will be safe on your premises. A permit will also give you legal recourse from insurance companies if an incident or accident occurs within your building.

Before moving into a building to start a business, talk to the team at Cockburn on 08 9411 3444 or email customer@cockburn.wa.gov.au.

An update on the Surf Park in Jandakot

Perth, get ready to hang ten! The proposed $100m, Aventuur-owned surf park at Prinsep Road was given the green light for development by the Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) on 20 March 2023.

As per the private developer's website, Aventuur expects construction to start this year, with the park set to open to the public in 2025. The surf park will be home to the largest wave pool in the southern hemisphere, the 56-piston Wavegarden Cove, promising an unparalleled surfing experience for all skill levels.

In addition to the surfing lagoon, the park will feature a high-performance surf academy, a hire store, and skate features, as well as a pump track for non-surfers. Visitors can also look forward to a health and wellness centre, beach club, quality restaurants and bars, accommodation, casual workspaces, and retail stores.

This new development is set to put Cockburn on the map as a premier destination for surfers and beachgoers alike!

Safety upgrades for busy Spearwood roundabout

One of Cockburn’s busiest roundabouts at the Spearwood Avenue and Hamilton Road intersection in Spearwood has been made safer thanks to $507,245 from the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program.

Islands have been installed to slow the speed of vehicles entering the roundabout. Other upgrades to the intersection include new street lighting, cyclist and pedestrian path improvements, road resurfacing, drainage, kerbing and a crash barrier on the Spearwood Avenue northbound approach.

The Black Spot Program targets roads with a proven crash history or locations identified as high-risk. Between 2015-2019, 19 crashes were recorded at the roundabout.

Microchipping allows us to find your dog

A gentle reminder to those who are lucky enough to own a dog, please get them microchipped and registered.

Since 2020, we have seen a 33 per cent increase in the number of animals in our pound. Our rangers can only return them to you safely if they are microchipped. Microchips contain your contact details; without this, your pet may never find its way back home.

Once your pet is microchipped by a vet, you can register it and report the microchip number to the City. Knowing how many dogs and where they are located, allows us to provide the right amount and type of services for dogs and their owners in Cockburn. To microchip your dog, visit your local vet. To register your dog, visit our website.
